PhD position

Published on January 10, 2024

The ARPES group of Felix Baumberger and Anna Tamai invites applications for a PhD position in experimental quantum matter physics. The position is for a nominal period of 4 years with the possibility to extend for one year.

The successful candidate will join our nano-ARPES team working on the electronic properties of 2D materials. We are interested in band structure effects including spin-orbit coupling and topology, in electronic correlations and in other many-body effects such as electron-phonon interaction. The fabrication of van der Waals heterostructures and the optimization of their quality is an integral part of the work. ARPES measurements will be performed with our unique in-house laser-ARPES instrument and at different synchrotron beamlines abroad. Examples of our recent work can be found on the group website and in the publications of the group.

Applicants should hold a master’s degree (or equivalent) and have a strong background in quantum matter physics. Experience in relevant experimental techniques such as 2D materials fabrication, laser-physics, ARPES or surface science techniques is desirable but not necessary. We encourage applicants who are self-motivated and eager to push the boundaries of current knowledge. Strong communication skills in English (spoken and written) are required.

We offer the opportunity to work in a state-of-the-art laboratory on a research project at the forefront of a very active field. The successful candidate will be embedded in a creative and stimulating environment and will have excellent opportunities to launch their own career in research.

To apply, please submit a cover letter, a CV including contact details of at least two referees and an academic transcript with the list of courses and grades, all in a single pdf file by email to felix.baumberger@unige.ch. If available, please provide a link to the manuscript of your master thesis.

For further information, please contact Prof. Felix Baumberger or Dr. Anna Tamai.

Applications are still possible after the deadline until the position is filled, but shortlisting will already have started.

Application until 30.04.2024
